extend与expand的区别

extend指线性的，单方向的延长：

The footballer has no intention of extending his contract with the club.
这位球员不打算延长与该俱乐部的合同。

The chemist’s has extended its opening hours until midnight.
这家药店已经将营业时间延长至午夜。

Extend your arms above your head and stay still for 30 seconds.
双臂伸直举到头部上方，然后保持30秒不动。

 

expend指向四面八方的扩大：

Our next goal is to expand our business internationally.
我们的下一个目标是将业务扩展到国外。

Scientists believe that our universe is expanding at a high speed.
科学家们认为我们的宇宙正在不断地高速膨胀。 

The study trip to Europe has expanded my horizons.
这次欧洲游学开拓了我的眼界。 

 

expand不是expend。这俩词读音相同，但是expend是花钱的意思。
