The happy secret to better working

We were playing on the top of a bunking bed（双人床）

on one side of the bunk bed，I had put out all of my G.L.Joe soliders and weaponry(武器 兵器的总称) and on the other side were all my sister's My Little Ponies(pony 小马) ready for a cavalry(骑兵 装甲兵) charge(这个charge 解释为突袭 突击).  There are differing acoounts of what actually happened that afternoon(我们对那天下午发生的事有不同的说法)　　

my sister's a little on the clumsy side(我妹妹有点笨手笨脚). somehow, without any help or push from her older brother at all(不知怎么回事，我这个做哥哥的既没碰也没推她), suddenly Amy disappeared off of the top of the bunk bed(我妹妹突然就掉下去了) and landed with this crash on the floor(狠狠的摔在了地上).

I nervously peered over the side of the bed(我紧张地从床的一侧往下瞄) to see what had befallen my fallen sister (看她到底发生了什么事) and saw that she had landed painfully on her hands and knees on all fours on the ground  (发现她痛苦地趴在地上 四脚着地)

I was nervous because my parents had charged me with（叮嘱过我）making sure that my sister and I played as safely and as quitely as possible（妹妹和我玩的时候要注意安全，不要吵闹）

Heroically(英雄气概地) pushing her out of the way of an oncoming imaginary sniper(狙击手) bullet （我英雄气概地把她从假想的狙击手的子弹中推开）

I was trying as hard as I could to be on my best behavior(我拼尽力气展现我最厉害的一面)

I saw my sister's face , this wail of pain and suffering and suprise（我看我妹妹的脸 满脸的痛苦 惊讶）threatening to erupt from her mouth and wake my parents(马上就要哭出来了，极有可能吵醒我父母) from the long winter's snap for which they have settled( 习惯在漫长冬季午睡   settle for 习惯...)

So i did the only thing my frantic(手忙脚乱的) seven year-old brain could think to do to avert this tragedy(一个手忙脚乱的7岁男孩唯一能想到的事来避免悲剧)

No human lands on all fours like that （人类是不会像那样四脚落地的）,Amy I think this means you're a unicorn(独角兽)

There was nothing in the world would want more than not to be Amy the hurt five year-old little sister, but Amy the special unicorn (我妹妹最不想做的就是哪个受伤的5岁的小妹妹艾米，想做的是超级独角兽艾米)

Of course, this option was open to her brain at no point in the past(以前她完全没有做独角兽的想法)

you could see how my poor manipulated(可怜的被操控的) sister faced conflict(纠结) as her little brain attempted to devote resources to feeling the pain and suffering and suprise she just experienced(她的小脑袋决定是继续回味刚才经历的疼痛 折磨 和惊讶)  or contemplating her new-found identity as a unicorn (或是仔细思考作为独角兽的新身份)

a smile spread across her face(她的脸上划过一丝微笑) and she scrambled back up onto the bunk bed(重新爬回双层床的上铺)

something was going to be at the vanguard(先锋) of a scientific revolution  (当时的事情 是科学革命的先锋观点) occuring two decades later in the way we look at the human brain (发生在20年之后 我们看待人脑时的方式)

we stumbled across(偶然发现) something called positive psycology(积极心理学)

the very first thing they said to never do is to start your talk with a graph (他们强调的第一件事就是永远不要用图表开始你的谈论)

I can delete that dot because that's clearly a measurement error(测量错误) it's messing up my data(它把我的数据弄乱了)

how do we eliminate the outliers （异常值）so we can find the line of best fit(最适合的曲线) 

what we do is creating the cult（狂热 信徒 迷信） of the average with science（科学里的平均值概念） 

we tailor the class right towards the average(我们把教室里的孩子都归设为平均水平)

that means you're depressed or have a disorder(有抑郁症 或者 心理障碍) or hopefully(很可能) both

Positive pychology posits that if we study what's merely average, we will remain merely average   (积极心理学假设， 如果我们只研究平均水平，我们就会停留在平均水平)

resilience in the face of challenge(面对挑战的弹性)

we can glean information(收集信息) not just how to move people up the average but how we can move the entire average up in our companies and schools worldwide(如何将整个平均线提高)
