Soil Erosion:How to deal with this thief of soil fertility

China's soil erosion area has expanded to 1.5 million square kilometers, accounting for about one-sixth of China's total, and 5 billion tons of soil are lost every year.It is clear that soil erosion is a major environmental problem for us.In order to gain insight into the causes and effects of soil erosion so that I can better propose ways to deal with it, I wrote this blog.

Causes:

  • Natural causes

  1. Landform:the steep terrain and numerous ravine area make it easy for water to flow and take away the soil.
  2. Climate:precipitation is concentrated, and heavy rain is abundant.Heavy winds can also blow away soil.
  3. Hydrologist:there are lots of surface runoff and low rate is high.
  4. Vegetation:little vegetation,bare surface,lots of loose buildups.
  5. Soil:loose soil and vertically jointed/clay soil and infiltrates slowly.
  • Man-made Causes

  1. human activities destruct the vegetation(Indiscriminate logging, wrong farming, mining ect.)
  2. population increases and urban development  intensify land loads

A video to explain the causes of soil erosion.【水土流失的原因-哔哩哔哩】 https://b23.tv/mA5kZfL

Example:

The Loess Plateau has rugged terrain, large slope, precipitation concentrated in summer, heavy rainfall, low vegetation coverage, loose loess soil, which is easily suffer from the soil erosion. Historically, the construction of palaces, large-scale logging, and unreasonable reclamation have exacerbated soil erosion.

Consequences:

  • Reducing or even losing land productivity
  • Silting up rivers, lakes, reservoirs and even flooding
  • Polluted water quality ,affects the ecological balance
  • The dust pawrticles merge in the air and causes air pollution
  • Desertification
