Introduction to columns

A site column is a reusable column definition, or template, that you can assign to multiple lists across multiple SharePoint sites. Site columns decrease rework and help you ensure consistency of metadata across sites and lists. Use the links in this section to learn how to create, customize, and update site and list columns.

Creating columns

You can create columns in the three ways:

By using the WSS user interface

By using the WSS object model

By deploying a feature that installs the column based on an xml definition file
