The Dragon Boat Festival is one of China's traditional festivals with a long history. As early as 78 BC (and perhaps even earlier in the Warring States Period), people began to celebrate it. Throughout the centuries, people across the country have commemorated this festival in diverse traditional ways, passing down its rich cultural heritage from generation to generation.
Initially, people made zongzi not to mourn Qu Yuan, but as an offering to him after he drowned in the Miluo River. They were worried that fish in the river would eat the food, so they wrapped it in leaves and made it in an angular shape before throwing it into the water, making it difficult for fish to consume. As time went on, with the active advocacy of the government, the creative works of literati, and the enthusiastic participation of the general public, the customs of dragon boat racing and zongzi - making gradually became deeply ingrained in the Dragon Boat Festival celebrations and have continued to the present day. However, due to geographical differences, dragon boat racing has been more prevalent in areas south of Hunan. In recent years, though, regions in the north, such as Liaoning, have also started to adopt dragon boat racing as a way to honour Qu Yuan, the esteemed patriotic poet.
The various customs of the Dragon Boat Festival form a rich tapestry of folk culture, reflecting the depth and diversity of Chinese cultural traditions. Zongzi - making stands out as a particularly significant custom. The shapes and fillings of zongzi vary distinctly across different regions. In the north, zongzi are often elongated and filled with red bean paste or date paste, while in the south, they tend to be tetrahedral and may contain ingredients like fresh meat or egg yolks. Making zongzi is not just about preparing a culinary delicacy; it also serves as a cherished time for family reunions and passing on family values. Family members gather together, chatting and making zongzi in a warm and joyful atmosphere. Additionally, since "zongzi" is a homophone for "zhong" (meaning "to be admitted to"), it has come to symbolize success in exams. In recent years, as the Dragon Boat Festival has coincided with the college entrance examinations, people have begun to express their best wishes for candidates to excel and gain admission to top universities like those referred to as "985 universities".
Qu Yuan, a celebrated patriotic poet in history, was known for his courage in speaking out against slander and his unwavering dedication to his country. His deep concern for his homeland and its people made him a symbol of patriotism, which has become a central part of the Dragon Boat Festival's significance. Activities held during the festival to remember Qu Yuan act as a bridge connecting the past and the present. They not only keep his memory alive but also inspire people's love for their country. This spirit of patriotism, much like an ever - flowing river, has been passed down and promoted throughout the history of the Chinese nation. It has motivated generations of Chinese people to work tirelessly for national prosperity and to contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the realization of the Chinese Dream.
