From hunters to rangers

In the 1980s, the Xinyi Village in Sichuan Province was known as a hunters’village. Life was hard in this mountain village, The land on the hillside was difficult to farm. Many villagers had to hunt wild animals to make a living.

They also cut down trees for sale and heating. As the villagers hunted further into the forest and cut down more trees, they were seeing less and less wildlife.

In 1992,a flood hit the village and caused great loss to many families. It came as a wake -up call for the locals. The villagers realized that they had to change their old way of life.

They started to raise bees and other animals to make money. And they now use electric heaters. They don't use firewood for heating.

The villagers have alo formed a group of fourteen forest rangers. Twelve of them were workers in the past.

They have set up camefas in the forest to monitor the wild animals in order to protect them, The forest areas are being restored to their natural beauty.

"We shot wild animals with guns in the past, but now we only shoot them with cameras said one ranger. “We can only live well when we live in harmony with nature."
