Naming & Marketing

A news thread posted on neowin.net just said that the next version of Windows, currently codenamed Longhorn will in fact be named Windows Vista. Vista means "vision" in Italian, and in English, it actually means(quoted from bonk's post):
  • A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees.
  • an awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view.

Although from its pure meaning, it's a cool name, and sometimes can be perfectly associated with a lot of things such as "vision", or " insightfullness", hoards of guys still have some bizzare problem with them, you even will be surprised to find that an English speaking geek will file an hilarious Anti-Vista Petition on Channel9 just because he's been told that this name means "chicken" in Latvian and "cheap" (or "save") in Icelandish.

But anyway, MSFT choose this name for its next big release - Longhorn shows that they really have a lot of phenominal marketing guys over there, and they are really so ambitious of what they gonna offer to customers in 2006. if we look back on how Honda was embarrassed by their new car "Fitta"("fitta" is an old word, currently used in vulgar language to refer to a woman's genitals in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish), we can better understand that a good and meaningful name to some extents does result in successful marketing.

Personally, I like this name, and I am looking forward to Windows Vista
