《The Story of My Life》Introductiom - Historical and Literary Context - Education of the Deaf and Blind

At the time the Story of My Life was published, the idea of a disabled person as an active member of society was radical. Through there were institutes for deaf students and blind students in America, they emphasized vocational education, training their graduates to earn a living the only way the supposed the could. Helen Keller's education appeared nothing short of miraculous in comparison. It did, however, emerge from an identifiable tradition.
