7zip
Good question — and an important one.
The last officially supported version of 7-Zip for Windows XP is:
7-Zip 19.00 (2019-02-21)
That’s the final release guaranteed to work on Windows XP (and Vista). Later versions (20.x and up) require at least Windows 7.
✅ Recommended:
7-Zip 19.00 (32-bit x86)
-
File:
7z1900.exe -

🔍 Notes:
-
Works perfectly on both XP SP2 and SP3.
-
Supports LZMA2, ZIP, TAR, GZ, BZ2, ISO, and most modern formats.
-
AES-256 encryption works fine (though newer 7z archives with hardware acceleration flags might not decompress).
-
Avoid newer betas (21.x, 22.x, etc.) — they won’t launch on XP.
💡 Optional:
If you want a more modern extractor that still supports XP, consider PeaZip 6.9.2 (based on 7-Zip libraries). It’s heavier but has a GUI that’s friendlier than the spartan 7-Zip interface.
So, to summarize:
Use 7-Zip 19.00 (32-bit) for Windows XP — it’s the last stable and compatible version.
