You are a short boy. 你是一名个子矮的男孩。

英文和中文，哪里不一样？

short 是“矮的”意思，在这里用来形容男孩的身高; short 在英文里面被称作是形容词；形容词的功能，主要是用来形容人或事物的外观或状态，让人更清楚句子要表达的意思。

形容词通常放在名词的前面，用来描述“名词”的外观或状态。

形容词的功能：主要用来形容人或事物的外观或是状态；中文常用“……的”来表示。例如，tall（高的），short（矮的），fat（胖的），thin（瘦的），big（大的），small（小的）等。

例句分析1

中文：它是一只胖狗。
英文：它 + 是 + 一只 + 肥胖的 + 狗
= It is a fat dog.（O）
常见错误：It is fat dog.（X）
中文可以省掉“一只”，英文不能省略 a。

例句分析2

中文：他们是聪明的学生。
英文：他们 + 是 + 聪明的 + 学生们
= They are smart students. （O）
常见错误：They are a smart student. （X）

They 代表两个及以上，所以就不能再写 a，后面的名词“学生”也要改成复数 students。

this，that，these，those除了本身作代词之外，也可以有以下形容词的用法。

说明 矮个子的男孩 = short boy
这个男孩 = this boy
那个男孩 = that boy
这些男孩 = these boy
那些男孩 = those boy

例句分析

中文：那个男孩是高的。
英文：那个男孩 + 是 + 高的
= That boy is tall. （O）
常见错误：That a boy is tall. （X）
“那个男孩”已经取代“一个男孩”，所以就不能再写 a。

指示代词既可以当代词也可以当形容词。
