Reflection
Recently, we've learned how to create a digital story, and I've reaped a great deal. At first, I had no clue how to make a good digital story. I wasn't sure whether I should retell the entire movie Flipped or just describe a few segments, nor did I know what kind of words to use to depict how Juli Baker grew through the incident of the sycamore tree being cut down and the egg incident.
During the process of trying, I found it extremely challenging to describe, within just a few minutes, Juli's two - fold growth: her transition from ignorance to awareness and her emotional change towards Bryce. While writing, I also tried to depict the character through the five - sense experiences, but I was very limited. Since I couldn't experience it firsthand, it was hard to put pen to paper. In the description, I could only describe the scenery she saw from the sycamore tree to reflect her inner world. Moreover, it was even more difficult to skillfully connect these two incidents and turn them into a coherent story with a beginning and an end. Particularly, I pondered for a long time on how to transform Juli's inner growth from an abstract concept into something more concrete and detailed. I should make more use of techniques for depicting characters and the environment, such as more delicate descriptions of characters' thoughts and five - sense experiences.
Later, after seeing some excellent works shared by Senior Meng Chen, I realized how vividly others described the characters. I will continue to experience the charm of character - building in my writing.
