Why get up early
Its 4:55AM and in the darkness of your room, you see the billowing curtains on your half open window. “C’mon you can sleep for 5 more minutes, its too cold and too dark to get out of bed”, the voice in your head screams. “Hit the snooze button”, the voice whispers in your ear.
But you didn't ask for its opinion. The voice that you chose to hear is that of your dreams… of resistance. So you get the fuck the up.
- You drag your sleepy ass out of the bed and do 10 push ups. For the first 5, you feel groggy, cold and tired. its like someone slapped you awake in the middle of a dream. But then gradually the blood starts flowing to your arms and legs. You feel warm. You begin to breathe normally. Good Morning!
- You walk towards the kitchen. Mix 2 scoops of whey protein with some water in a shaker and have it on the empty stomach. It satiates you after an overnight fast. Your aching muscles need food…they have earned it!
Hereafter your morning can go in one of the two ways.
- You are hung up on a single thought. You are thinking about the emails you are supposed to respond to, the meetings your are supposed to attend and how unprepared your are for them. Or may be you are fixating on something from the past…an offhanded comment, a hot girl you met on the subway last evening or maybe your ex-girlfriend who dumped you for another guy. They are having the best time of their lives vacationing in the South Pacific.
You take a blank sheet and start scribbling—Fuck you. Fuck her. Fuck the world. Thoughts flow out on that piece of paper. Your insecurities…your fears…your lust; and then they STOP. You read back what you have written. DISGUSTING. Are you really this weak…this vulnerable? You burn the paper and flush it down the toilet.
But then you begin to notice something, you are no longer hung up on that thought anymore. Your body feels lighter and you can breathe normally. - You are calm and composed. You pull out your 5 Minute Journal and begin writing. The journal helps you catalog your thoughts and makes you more reflective, grateful and mindful of your activities.
Now, you sit on a chair or on the floor, plug headphones into your iPhone and hit the headspace icon. Time to quieten the rebellious voices…the voices that scream…the voices that whisper when you wake up. For the next 20 minutes you train your brain to listen to you.
You get up from the floor and put the kettle on the burner. Soon the water will reach 195F(~90C). You will pour the water on to the tea in your french press. And now you will WAIT. You will wait for the elixir of gods to brew while the dawn filters through your kitchen window. Breathe!
Remember that your mornings are when you sharpen your axe, polish your armour and buckle up for the battle Royale.
