Reflective Journal on Digital Multimodal Composing Workshops
Key Learnings
The workshops acquainted me with digital multimodal composing, covering its knowledge base of multimodal literacy, design thinking/creativity, and digital and AI technologies. I got to know the five modes of multimodality: linguistic/alphabetic, visual, aural, gestural, and spatial. In writing, I learned techniques like using questions, dialogues, and emotions to introduce stories, and applying concrete language to describe scenes. I'm also aware of common problems at word, sentence, and passage levels and corresponding coping skills. These have significantly enriched my understanding of multimodality, showing me how different modes collaborate to convey information.
Usefulness
In daily life, when writing social media posts, I can apply visual and linguistic modes, inserting eye-catching images and vivid text to attract attention. When making presentations, I can combine multiple modes, using visual elements like charts and appropriate audio to enhance the effect. Multimodal knowledge is valuable in various learning and working scenarios for information presentation and communication, as it can improve the efficiency and appeal of information delivery.
Suggestions
I hope future workshops will include more hands - on sessions with digital tools, such as AI image generation and video editing software. It would also be great to explore the differences in multimodal applications across different cultural backgrounds. Group projects could be organized to help participants better master the knowledge through practice.
Personal Experience
The workshops inspired my creative enthusiasm. Intellectually, they broadened my horizons, making me think about integrating multiple modes to express ideas. Emotionally, my initial unfamiliarity with multimodality turned into anticipation for creation. It opened a new door for expression, making me more eager to explore diverse ways of information presentation.
