I Eat And Dress And Labor
I wake from a nap
And the same clear words greet my mind
That I say every day upon waking,
“Where can I find the Friend?”
I eat and dress and labor
For only one reason.
But why explain about the essential today
And demean the holy?
We are a couple of barroom sailors,
Marooned,
In need of good drink and company
To true our perceptions.
Otherwise,
I am concerned about that odd look
That sometimes creeps into your eyes –
That seems to mistake me for a pretty,
Available mermaid.
Upon waking each day
My first words to my heart always are
“Any news of the Friend?”
