Licensing
Licensing for vSphere 5 - Updated for vSphere 5.1
The new vSphere licensing model for both vSphere 5.0 and vSphere 5.1 is based on processor licences. Each physical processor (CPU) in a server needs to have a vSphere 5 processor licence.
There is no limitation on the number of VMs or the amount of virtual memory (vRAM) on each licenced processor. There is no restriction on the number of physical cores or the amount of physical RAM.
If you purchase vSphere with Operations Management the two licences are tied together and behave as a single entitlement.
A Support and Subscription (SnS) contract is required for every vSphere edition purchased.

Editions
vSphere Standard
Supports 8-way vCPU entitlement and features vMotion, Storage vMotion, High Availability and Fault Tolerance, Data Protection and Replication, and vShield Endpoint.
vSphere Enterprise
Supports 32-way vCPU entitlement, features all the capabilities of vSphere Standard plus Distributed Resource Scheduler, Distributed Power Management and Storage APIs for Array Integration/Multipathing.
vSphere Enterprise Plus
Supports 64-way vCPU entitlement, features all the capabilities of vSphere Enterprise plus Distibuted Switch, Storage DRS and Profile-Driven Storage, I/O Controls (Network and Storage) and SR-IOV, and Host Profiles and Auto Deploy.
VMware vSphere with Operations Management Standard
Includes VMware vSphere Standard with Operations Management.
VMware vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise
Includes VMware vSphere Enterprise with Operations Management.
VMware vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus
Includes VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus with Operations Management.
VMware vSphere Essentials
Supports 3 servers with up to 2 processors each with 8-way vCPU entitlement. Includes 1 instance of vCenter Server Essentials.
VMware vSphere Essentials Plus
Supports 3 servers with up to 2 processors each with 8-way vCPU entitlement. Includes 1 instance of vCenter Server Essentials. Features vMotion, High Availability, Data Protection and Replication, vShield Endpoint and vSphere Storage Appliance.
vSphere Standard with Operations Management Acceleration Kit
Supports 6 processors each with 8-way vCPU entitlement. Includes 1 instance of vCenter Server Standard. Features vMotion, High Availability, Data Protection and Replication, vShield Endpoint, Fault Tolerance (1 vCPU), Storage vMotion, Health Monitoring and Performance Analytics, Capacity Management and Optimization, and Operations Dashboard and Root Cause Analysis.
vSphere Enterprise with Operations Management Acceleration Kit
Supports 6 processors each with 32-way vCPU entitlement. Includes 1 instance of vCenter Server Standard and a 6 CPU licence of vSphere Data Protection Advanced. Features all the capabilities of the Standard edition plus Distributed Resource Scheduler and Distributed Power Management, and Storage APIs for Array Integration/Multipathing.
vSphere Enterprise Plus with Operations Management Acceleration Kit
Supports 6 processors each with 64-way vCPU entitlement. Includes 1 instance of vCenter Server Standard and a 6 CPU licence of vSphere Data Protection Advanced. Features all the capabilities of the Enterprise edition, plus Distributed Switch, Storage DRS and Profile-Driven Storage, I/O Controls (Network and Storage) and SR-IOV and Host Profiles and Auto Deploy.
vSphere Desktop
Includes all the functionality of vSphere Enterprise Plus but can only be used for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments - working with both VMware Horizon View and other 3rd party VDI connection brokers.
