corner

Origin: cornere, from corne 'horn, corner', from Latin cornu 'horn, point'

Corner may refer to:

  • Corner kick, a method of restarting play in a game of association football
  • Cornerback, also known as corner, a position in American and Canadian football
  • Corner (route), a pattern run by a receiver in American football
  • Penalty corner, a method of restarting play in field hockey [曲棍球. hockey:冰球], awarded following an infringement by the defending team
  • Corner (horse jumping obstacle) Also called an apex, corner fences are in a triangular shape with the horse jumping over one corner of the triangle.
  • Corner, a point at which a derivative of a mathematical function is discontinuous
  • Corner, a fixed point in metes and bounds surveying
  • Corner, an intersection in a road or street
  • Corner detection, an important task in computer vision. A corner can be defined as the point where two non-parallel edges meet, or ought to meet.
  • Cornering the market

Metes and bounds is a system or method of describing land, real property (in contrast to personal property) or real estate. Typically the system uses physical features of the local geography, along with directions and distances, to define and describe the boundaries of a parcel of land. A typical description for a small parcel of land would be: "Commencing at a corner at the intersection of two stone walls near an apple tree on the north side of Muddy Creek road one mile above the junction of Muddy and Indian Creeks, thence north for 150 rods to the end of the stone wall bordering the road, thence northwest along a line to a large standing rock on the corner of the property now or formerly belonging to John Smith, thence west 150 rods to the corner of a barn near a large oak tree, thence south to Muddy Creek road, thence down the side of the creek road to the point of commencement."

In finance, cornering the market consists of obtaining sufficient control of a particular stock, commodity, or other asset in an attempt to manipulate the market price. One definition of cornering a market is "having the greatest market share in a particular industry without having a monopoly". Companies that have cornered their markets have usually done so in an attempt to gain greater leeway in their decisions; for example, they may desire to charge higher prices for their products without fears of losing too much business. The cornerer hopes to gain control of enough of the supply of the commodity to be able to set the price for it.

Corner detection is an approach used within computer vision systems to extract certain kinds of features and infer the contents of an image. Corner detection is frequently used in motion detection, image registration, video tracking, image mosaicing, panorama stitching, 3D reconstruction and object recognition. Corner detection overlaps with the topic of interest point detection.

Image registration is the process of transforming different sets of data into one coordinate system. Data may be multiple photographs, data from different sensors, times, depths, or viewpoints. It is used in computer vision, medical imaging, military automatic target recognition, and compiling and analyzing images and data from satellites. Registration is necessary in order to be able to compare or integrate the data obtained from these different measurements.

Corner Detection is an important low-level step in many object detection and recognition tasks. Common approaches are:

  • Template Matching
  • Second-order Derivative Schemes
  • Plessey Corner Detector (also known as the Harris detector)
  • Median filter based corner detection
  • Hough Transform approach
