brother

A brother is a man or boy who shares one or more parents with another. The female counterpart is a sister. Although the term typically refers to a familial relationship, it is sometimes used endearingly to refer to non-familial relationships. A full brother is a first degree relative.

The term brother comes from a Proto-Indo-European word, which becomes Latin frater, of the same meaning. fraternity:

1. a club at an American college or university that has only male members →sorority, fraternal
2. a feeling of friendship between members of a group
3. the teaching/scientific/criminal etc fraternity = all the people who work in a particular profession or share a particular interest

Sibling [brother or sister] rivalry is the competition between brothers and sisters for their parents' attention or love. Step-siblings are children born of two different families who have been joined by marriage, defacto or otherwise, of at least one of their respective parents. A male step-sibling is a stepbrother and a female is a stepsister. The step-siblings relationship is connected through law and/or social norms and is not a blood relation. Step-siblings are sometimes abbreviated informally as stepsibs.

Joe Biden, Frank Biden, and Jim Biden are brothers. George W. Bush, Jeb Bush, Neil Bush and Marvin Bush are sons of George H. W. Bush. John, Robert and Ted Kennedy are brothers.

• be (not) (one's) brother's keeper = be responsible for the actions, behavior, or whereabouts of one's close relative or friend (not necessarily a brother). Often used in the negative to express frustration that such responsibility is assumed
