allow, allowance
On aircraft, there are two types of baggage, which are treated differently: checked baggage and hand/carry-on luggage. For both types, transportation companies have rules on the weight and size. The baggage allowance is the amount of checked baggage or hand/carry-on luggage the company will allow per passenger. There may be limits on the amount that is allowed free of charge, and hard limits on the amount that is allowed.
In the UK tax system, personal allowance is the threshold above which income tax is levied on an individual's income. A person who receives less than their own personal allowance in taxable income (such as earnings and some benefits) in a given tax year does not pay income tax; otherwise, tax must be paid according to how much is earned above this level.
The allowance system was a system of poor relief in Britain during the 19th century. The allowance system allowed the able-bodied [≠disabled] poor to get allowance to boost their wages.
If you allow a length of time or an amount of something for a purpose, you include it in your planning. Seam allowance (sometimes called inlays) is the area between the fabric edge and the stitching line on two (or more) pieces of material being sewn together. Seam allowances can range from 6.4 mm wide to as much as several inches.
Pocket money is a small amount of money one carries to spend on nonessential things. Spending money is cash for incidental or minor expenses. e.g.
1. We give the kids 10 bucks at the start of the week as a bit of pocket money. If they spend it all, then that's all they get till the next Monday.
2. We don't believe in giving the kids pocket money without asking them to do chores.
3. Can I borrow a dollar? I'm out of all my spending money.
4. The company has given me a bit of pocket money while I'm here, so why don't we go find somewhere nice to eat?
