An adventure is an exciting experience that is typically bold [大胆的], sometimes risky, undertaking. Adventures may be activities with some potential for physical danger such as traveling, exploring, skydiving, mountain climbing, scuba diving [水肺潜水], river rafting [划筏子] or participating in extreme sports [极限运动]. Skydiving is the sport of jumping out of a plane and falling freely through the air before opening the parachute [降落伞].

Some of the oldest and most widespread [广为流传] stories in the world are stories of adventure such as Homer's The Odyssey [荷马的奥德赛]. Thomas Sawyer is the title character of the Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). He appears in three other novels by Twain: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), and Tom Sawyer, Detective (1896). Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a well-known example of a fantasized adventure story.

The adventure novel exhibits these "protagonist [主角] on adventurous journey" characteristics as do many popular feature films, such as Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark [夺宝奇兵].

In video-game culture, an adventure game is a video game in which the player assumes the role of a protagonist in an interactive story driven by exploration and puzzle-solving [探索和解谜]. The genre's [流派的] focus on story allows it to draw heavily from other narrative-based [叙事的] media, literature [文学作品] and film, encompassing [包括] a wide variety of literary genres. Many adventure games (text and graphic) are designed for a single player, since this emphasis on story and character makes multi-player design difficult.

Many adventures are based on the idea of a quest [求索]: the hero goes off in pursuit [追求] of a reward, whether it be a skill, prize, or perhaps the safety of a person. On the way, the hero must overcome [战胜、克服] various obstacles [障碍].

An adventure playground is a playground for children that contains building materials, discarded industrial parts, etc, used by the children to build with, hide in, climb on, etc. A jungle gym is a structure of vertical and horizontal rods where children can climb and play.
