What Fruits and Vegetables Can Cats Eat? A Complete Safety Guide

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they get nearly all of the nutrients they need from animal protein. Because of this, fruits and vegetables should never replace a balanced cat diet.
That said, some fruits and vegetables can be offered as an occasional treat in small amounts. Others are toxic and should never be given to your cat.
Here's what every cat owner should know.

Fruits Cats Should Never Eat
Some fruits contain substances that can be toxic to cats. Even small amounts may cause serious health problems.

Grapes, Raisins, and Currants
Grapes and raisins have been linked to sudden kidney failure in both cats and dogs. Although researchers still don't fully understand why, even a small amount may be dangerous.
If your cat accidentally eats grapes or raisins, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Persimmons
Persimmon flesh isn't considered highly toxic, but the seeds can become lodged in the digestive tract and may cause intestinal blockage or irritation.
Always keep persimmons out of your cat's reach.

Cherries, Peaches, Plums, and Apricots
The flesh of these fruits isn't the biggest concern—the pits, stems, and leaves are.
They contain cyanogenic compounds that release cyanide when chewed, potentially causing breathing problems, digestive upset, and poisoning. The pits also present a choking and intestinal obstruction hazard.

Avocados
Avocados contain persin, a natural fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting and digestive upset in some animals.
While the small amounts of avocado oil used in some commercial pet foods are specially processed and considered safe, fresh avocado should not be offered to cats.

Citrus Fruits
Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits contain essential oils and compounds that can irritate a cat's digestive system.
Eating citrus fruits may lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort. The peels and essential oils are even more irritating than the fruit itself.

Fruits Cats Can Eat in Moderation
Most fruits are high in natural sugar, so they should only be offered as an occasional treat—not a regular part of your cat's diet.
ApplesApples provide fiber and vitamin C, but cats don't actually need fruit-derived vitamins.
If you choose to offer apple slices, remove the seeds, stem, and core first, as the seeds contain cyanide-producing compounds.

Watermelon
Seedless watermelon is mostly water, making it a refreshing summer treat.
Serve only small seedless pieces, since the seeds can pose a choking risk and excessive sugar isn't ideal for cats.

Strawberries
Strawberries contain antioxidants and vitamin C, but they also contain natural sugars.
Offer only a small piece occasionally, and wash them thoroughly to remove pesticide residue.

Bananas
Bananas are safe for cats but are relatively high in carbohydrates and sugar.
Too much banana may cause stomach upset or diarrhea, so only offer a tiny bite occasionally.

Cantaloupe, Honeydew, and Pineapple
Many cats enjoy the sweet smell of melons because some aroma compounds resemble those found in animal proteins.
These fruits aren't toxic, but they're high in sugar and should be served in small amounts after removing the rind and seeds.
Fresh pineapple is also safe in moderation, although too much may upset your cat's stomach.

Papaya
Papaya contains fiber and natural digestive enzymes.
While it isn't harmful in small quantities, there's little evidence that it provides meaningful health benefits for cats, so treat it as an occasional snack rather than a dietary supplement.
