Reflecting on Digital Storytelling
Looking back on creating the digital story, I’ve gone from feeling completely lost to becoming much more confident and skilled. I went through a lot of changes before getting more creative, feeling different emotions, and becoming more confident in my writing.
At first, I didn't know where to start. When thinking, I wrote down the main parts of the classic Cinderella story. But when I tried to tell it from different views, things got tricky. Using the first person of view as Cinderella, I could write about how sad she was when her stepmother was mean, and how excited and nervous she felt going to the ball in her glass slippers. When I switched to the third person of view of the Fairy Godmother, I could explain how the magic was prepared in a mysterious way. Writing the script was hard because I had to make sure Cinderella’s thoughts sounded real, while the Fairy Godmother’s words had a magical feel.
For materials, I found free, old-fashioned fairy tale pictures online and used CapCut to add sparkly effects to make the magic scenes look more real. Editing was a real struggle at first. The pictures and the voice didn’t match well. I had to listen to the recording again and again, changing when each picture appeared, until everything fit together smoothly.
At the beginning, I was both excited and nervous. I was happy to try a new way of telling the story, but worried I wouldn’t do it well. As I got more into the characters, I really enjoyed it, especially when I saw how different views could make the old story feel fresh. I even loved writing the characters’ conversations Cinderella’s sad replies and the Fairy Godmother’s mysterious hints made them seem alive.
I’ve learned a lot of useful skills. I can now tell stories from different perspectives to make them more interesting. I’m also better at finding and using pictures and videos, and basic video editing. Before, I wasn’t sure if I could do digital storytelling, but now I feel proud of what I’ve made. I’m eager to use these new skills for more creative projects.
This experience taught me that digital storytelling is all about mixing words and pictures. Sharing more examples of telling stories from different views could help others get more ideas. Through this project, I’ve found the fun of digital storytelling and am ready for more challenges in the future.
