Chapter one.

1. introduction：We are introduced to the narrator, a pliot, and his ideas about grown-ups.

• Word:
  • narrator: n.旁白、讲述者
  • pilot: n.飞行员 （exploit vt:开发，剥削 n.英勇的行为）
• Phrases & Collocations:
  be introduced to stb./sth. 被介绍了stb./sth. 这里“are introduced to”有一个中英思维的差异，英文是“接受者视角” 而中文是“介绍者视角”。理解的抓手是搞清楚介绍的方向，主体（we）←（被动地接触）←客体（the narrator and his ideas），不要被这个to诱导到。
• Syntax & Grammar：
  • 这里是一个一般现在时的被动语态，还省略了动作的引导者（by）。
  • a pliot是一个the narrator的同位语

2. Once when I was six years old,I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest.

• magnificent: adj.壮丽的

3. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal.

• a boa constrictor 大蟒蛇
• boa n.长围巾
• constrictor n.大蟒
• in the act of doing 翻译为：正在做……较合适

• are (not) able to: （没）有能力做
• through adv.通过，完全地 adj.直达的 prep.直通，贯穿
• thought v.想(think 的过去式)
• ponder v.沉思 ponder over 强调的是一种更深入、更专注、更认真的思考，通常涉及需要仔细权衡的问题。
