1. As grandparents, we are included in our family's daily lives. However, we are the ones that can bridge that generation gap in the family. Even though it is not an easy role for us to play, it is an important one, for we are more experienced in life, and more open mind to what's happening in our families.
2. Today's grandchildren, for example the 12 and 13 year olds, are like 17 and 18 year olds. Wow, that is pretty terrible--and yet it can be pretty wonderful if they are guided the correct way. It is important for us to be at hand and keep those lines of communication open.
3. In my particular family, five kids and six grandchildren, my life definitely seems to be an ongoing soap opera. As a senior, I have learned to become more flexible and have become an important part in taking care of my grandchildren.
4. My 18 year old granddaughter had a huge difficulty in communicating with her mother and father. Thank goodness I keep an open door. I talked with her and understood the cause of her problem, then, I called a family meeting with her mother and dad. Together, we worked things out. It definitely helped that my children and grandchildren realized that I would always be fair to both sides.
5. As seniors, we should not play any serious role. But remember, parenting never stops. Believe me, I still get up, get out, and have a life. But we can never give up what we have worked so hard to protect the family.
