Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS)

There are two different Sharepoint products offered by Microsoft:

  • Windows Sharepoint Services (WSS)
  • Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server  (MOSS)

Both are effective, powerful, and much more capable with the 2007 versions released (WSS v.3 and MOSS 2007). The ease with which end-users can create workspaces and configure the functionality can be phenomenally empowering for teams that learn to take advantage of SharePoint capabillities.

But that ease of configurability can result in workspaces full of unorganized information without careful organizational management i.e., TMT. create common name/reference Both  versions integrate well with Exchange, Outlook, and Groove to provide a broader range of services than is available without custom development from any other networked tools platform.

All features in WSS exist in MOSS, plus many more. The  difference is that MOSS provides capabilities that support use across an enterprise (multiple divisions and/or multiple lines of business) whereas WSS would support the groups of one division or LOB.  With MOSS, the Business Intelligence, Content Management, search, forms, and other capabilities can act on any subset of the divisions' or lines-of-business' collections of sites.  This provides powerful cross-enterprise information capability.

Think of the collection of sites (workspaces) in a WSS implementation as just one division or line of business. Here are more details on the differences between WSS and MOSS.

Microsoft Sharepoint WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services)

WSS provides solid capabilities in both Project Management and Document Management.

Version 3 of WSS (released in 2007) adds   useful new capabilities over the prior version  (~2004): wiki, timeline displays of database data ("Lists" in Sharepoint jargon), much-improved user interface for configuring workspaces, workflow, and several more.

Pricing: The cost of (WSS)  is a good deal for many companies; it's included with the licensing of Windows Server. As long as the number  of user accounts set up in WSS is equal to or less than the number of Windows CALs  (Client Access Licenses) there are no additonal fees for WSS capabilities  If  requirements for number of accounts on WSS exceeds number of Windows server  CALs, you have to purchase more Windows server CALs. Exact pricing will depend  on the category of Window Server in use. And, if you want to make WSS available for internet users to register  (non-vpn users),  then there's a $20-$40,000 license hit. Verify. Sharepoint WSS requires SQL server, so factor that into cost, too.

WSS is also available as a hosted service. vendor reference here       Approximate prices  for hosted services are: Up to 100 user  accounts  ~ $100/month Unlimited user  accounts ~ $150/month Above include 2GB  total storage and 3GB transfer/mos. Add $3/month/GB of additional storage and  $12/month/500MB additional transfer.

Microsoft Sharepoint MOSS (MicroSoft Office Sharepoint Server)

Like  WSS, MOSS straddles the Project Management and Document Management categories of networked tools. However, MOSS is much more product than WSS; it is an "enterprise" level product versus a department-level product. MOSS includes MS's former standalone CMS (content management system) product as well as Business Intelligence and Forms (InfoForms) modules and has significantly better  search capability than WSS. verify And, of course, MOSS carries a significant price.

Pricing: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS), has two cost  components:   Server licenses (server products: basic MOSS  $4,450, Search Standard edition $8,500, Forms  $4,450) plus:   MOSS CALs  for each  user  ~$100 per account.  Packages  of CALs can reduce the per-account price; all prices are list   Costs for Microsoft SQL Server must be factored into total cost for MOSS Sharepoint.
