compare sth/sb to/with sth/sb. to和with有微妙的差异(a subtle distinction):

  • "comparing Miriam to a summer's day" Miriam(米丽亚姆)是个人,她和summer's day不是同一类的。
  • "comparing the Senate version of the bill with the House version" 参议院和众议院的bill(议案; 法案)是同类的。
  • "He compared the runner to a gazelle [瞪羚]." 95%的人觉得用to, 55%觉得用with. 我觉得从哺bu乳动物这个层面看是同类的。
  • "The police compared the forged signature with the original." 84% with, 76% to. "with" might have been even more acceptable had [如果(虚拟语气)] the sentence been about two forged signatures.

To implies "in the direction of" or "toward a target," with implies "together" or "side by side."

"compare and contrast" is an expression used when telling students to write about the things that are similar or different in works of literature or art. e.g. "Compare and contrast the main characters of these two novels."

S05E09 The One With Ross' Sandwich/Transcript
Rachel: (sitting down) So umm, what's this book about?
Phoebe: You didn't read this one either?!
Rachel: Well, I was gonna, but I accidentally read something else.
Phoebe: What?
Rachel: Vogue [a fashion magazine]! Hey, so tell me about this Jane Eyre [简爱] woman.
Phoebe: No! You should've read it yourself!
Rachel: Come on Phoebe! Don’t be such a goodie-goodie! [≠baddie]
Phoebe: Fine! Okay, all right, so Jane Eyre, first of all, you'd think she's a woman, but she's not. She's a cyborg [a creature that is partly human and partly machine].
Rachel: A cyborg?! Isn't that like a robot?!
Phoebe: Yeah, this book was light years ahead of its time. [光年是长度单位,不是时间单位]
The Teacher: (entering) Sorry I'm late. Let's get started. So, what did everybody think about Jane Eyre?
Phoebe: Umm, Rachel and I were just discussing it and she had some very interesting insights.
The Teacher: Well, go ahead Rachel. [go a head是去个头]
Rachel: Uh, thank you Phoebe. Umm, well, what struck me most when reading Jane Eyre was uh, how the book was so ahead of its time.
The Teacher: If you're talking about feminism [男女平等主义], I think you're right.
Rachel: Yeah, well, feminism yes, but also the robots.
...
[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, Rachel and Phoebe are returning from class.]
Rachel: (entering, angrily) Ugh, that was so embarrassing! I can't believe you let me go on and on like that!
Phoebe: (smiling) I'm sorry. It was just so funny when you started comparing Jane Eyre to Robocop [机械战警].
...
[Scene: The Class; Monica has taken Rachel's spot.]
Monica: (yelling and waving her hand in the air) I know! I know! I know!
The Teacher: Monica, you asked the question.
(She sits back defeated, and Phoebe groans with disgust.)
