Bowlegs refers to a condition in which a person's legs appear bowed (bent outward) even when the ankles are together. It is normal in babies due to their position in the womb. But a child who still has bowlegs at about age three should be evaluated by orthopedic specialist. The many causes of bowleg syndrome range from illnesses such as Blount's disease to improperly healed fractures, vitamin deficiencies and lead poisoning:
- Illnesses and conditions that cause bowleggedness include:
- abnormal bone development (bone dysplasia) 骨发育异常(骨发育不良)
- Blount's disease (more information below)
- Paget’s disease (a metabolic [新陈代谢] disease impacting the way bones break down and rebuild)
- improperly healed fractures
- lead poisoning
- achondroplasia (the most common form of dwarfism)
- rickets (a bone-weakening disorder caused by a vitamin D deficiency) 佝偻gōulóu病
- damage to growth plate 生长板(骺hóu板)损伤。
Blount's disease (also called tibia vara) [布朗特病也称胫骨内翻] is a growth disorder that affects the growth plates in the bones near the inside of the knee. Blount's slows down bone growth at these plates or halts growth there altogether. This leads to a bowlegged appearance and may also cause knee pain or instability.
There aren't many foods naturally high in vitamin D. That said, some of the best sources of vitamin D are fish liver oils and fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna fish. Eating foods fortified with calcium and vitamin D, such as milk, yogurt and orange juice, is an easy way to avoid a deficiency. Calcium and vitamin D work together. As calcium helps protect bone health, vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium effectively... Spending five to 30 minutes under the sun at least twice per week is the best way to avoid a deficiency... 1 egg: 41 IU (10 percent DV).
A Daily value (DV) of 10% means that 10% of your calories [卡路里] should come from a particular nutrient.
