A true antique (Latin: antiquus; 'old', 'ancient') is an item perceived as having value because of its aesthetic or historical significance, and often defined as at least 100 years old (or some other limit), although the term is often used loosely to describe any object that is old.

An antique is usually an item that is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features.

Antiques are usually objects that show some degree of craftsmanship, collectability, or a certain attention to design, such as a desk or an early automobile. They are bought at antiques shops, estate sales, auction houses, online auctions, and other venues, or estate inherited.

Traditionally, Chinese antiques are marked by a red seal, known as a 'chop', placed there by an owner. Experts can identify previous owners of an antique by reading the chops.

Antiquing is the act of shopping, identifying, negotiating, or bargaining for antiques.

difference-between-antique-and-vintage

For many decades, the term "collectible" represented anything that was not old enough to fall under the antique umbrella. The use of the word "vintage" in the 1980s and '90s was largely associated with specific collecting genres - such as the aforementioned clothing, costume jewelry, and postcards - that were not old enough to be called antiques. Whether you prefer to use vintage or collectible for newer items, just be sure to use antique to describe objects more than 100 years old and you won't go wrong.

Vintage, in winemaking, is the process of picking grapes and creating the finished product. A vintage wine is one made from grapes that were all, or primarily, grown and harvested in a single specified year.
