In both PS/SS and GoF, Hermione does not verbally tell Harry how she views/feels about him. Throughout the entire series, Hermione has not once placed a label on her relationship with Harry, however, in the finale, she will. Before going beyond the Veil (following the repetition of PS/SS), Harry and Hermione will once again have a heart-to-heart, only this time Hermione will not hold back. To Hermione, this conversation is extremely important because it may very well be the last one she ever has with Harry. She will not be sure if this idea of going into the Veil would work, and if it does, she doesn’t know if he would survive his confrontation with Voldemort. To Hermione, this is her last chance to give Harry the support that he needs—to tell Harry how she feels.
Hermione’s outpouring about her feelings will mark the first time on the written page that Harry has heard the words, “I love you,” from any other character. Harry will then return her feelings and they will proceed to share a mutual kiss. How and why? Harry’s “first kisses” so far have all been one sided, his next first kiss would have to be mutual in order to complete the dynamic. During Harry's first one, Cho kissed Harry without warning or permission, and, in turn, he repeated her action upon an unsuspecting Ginny. This time, Harry and Hermione will give each other permission and notification prior to their first (and perhaps last) kiss.
It is in Hermione’s confession that Harry will come to understand the true power of love. There’s an old saying that goes: “by loving someone you gain strength and by being loved by someone you gain courage”. By Hermione confessing her love for Harry, she gives him the key to unlock the power of love enabling Harry to defeat Voldemort.

Harry confronts Voldemort while retrieving the Philosopher’s Stone.
GoF – The Graveyard
Harry confronts Voldemort while retrieving the Triwizard cup.
DH – The Veil
In both PS/SS and GoF Harry does not expect to confront Voldemort. In PS/SS Harry believed that he was going to confront Snape not Voldemort. It was only when Hermione asked, “What if You-Know-Who is with him?” did Harry give a thought to a confrontation with Voldemort. In GoF, the Triwizard cup became a portkey that transported Harry into a confrontation with Voldemort. In DH, Harry will again confront Voldemort sooner than anticipated.
For PS/SS, Harry confronted Voldemort in a location he had never been to previously; the last room with the Mirror of Erised. For GoF, Harry confronted Voldemort in a location that he had been to previously but only during a vision: Little Hangleton. For DH, Harry will confront Voldemort in a location that he has physically been before: the DoM.
After visiting the locked room in the DoM, Harry and Hermione will journey to the room with the Veil in order to try separating Voldemort’s soul fragment from Harry’s scar. The Veil is a gateway, if you will, to the beyond. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a way to contact the dead, but rather it has a spiritual connection. When Harry reaches the potions room (using the repetition of PS/SS—after the trapdoor), he has to pass through the black flames (black flames=black veil) in order to proceed. As Harry and Hermione are saying their possible final farewells, Voldemort will emerge in the same fashion as before: being uncovered by a minion. In PS/SS Professor Quirrell unwrapped his turban revealing the parasitic Voldemort on the back of his head and in GoF Wormtail pulled open robes revealing the disfigured baby-like Voldemort. This will initiate a conflict between Voldemort, Harry, and Hermione. While trying to let Hermione escape, Harry will grab hold of Voldemort (in a selfless act) forcing both of them to fall behind the Veil.
Within the Veil, Harry’s soul will leave his body, the sixth Horcrux will be destroyed, the freed soul fragment will return to its origin, and Voldemort will again become mortal. Both Harry and Voldemort will become disoriented and drift away from their bodies. How will Harry return to his body and leave the veil? Sirius is going to guide him back to his body. This is precisely why Sirius had to die by falling through the Veil; he is the one who is going to help Harry out of the Veil. By the time Sirius guides Harry to safety, Voldemort will have lost himself within the bowels of the Veil, never again returning to the land of the living. In short, Harry will not have to become a murderer in order to defeat Voldemort.

“There’s only enough there for one of us,” he said. “That’s hardly one swallow.”
They looked at each other.
“Which one will get you back through the purple flames?”
Hermione pointed at a rounded bottle at the right end of the line.
“You drink that,” said Harry. “No, listen, get back and get Ron. Grab brooms from the flying-key room, they’ll get you out of the trapdoor and past Fluffy—go straight to the owlery and send Hedwig to Dumbledore, we need him. I might be able to hold Snape off for a while, but I’m no match for him, really.”
“But Harry—what if You-Know-Who’s with him?”
“Well—I was lucky once, wasn’t I?” said Harry, pointing at his scar. “I might get lucky again.”
Hermione’s lip trembled, and she suddenly dashed at Harry and threw her arms around him.
“Hermione!”
“Harry—you’re a great wizard, you know.”
“I’m not as good as you,” said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him.
“Me!” said Hermione. “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things—friendship and bravery and—oh Harry—be careful!”
“You drink first,” said Harry. “you are sure which, aren’t you?”
“Positive,” said Hermione. She took a long drink from the round bottle at the end, and shuddered.
“It’s not poison?” said Harry anxiously.
“No—but it’s like ice.”
“Quick, go, before it wears off.”
“Good luck—take care—“
“GO!”
Hermione turned and walked straight through the purple fire.
Harry took a deep breath and picked up the smallest bottle. He turned to face the black flames.
“Here I come,” he said, and he drained the little bottle in one gulp.

Harry felt as if Devil’s Snare was rooting him to the spot. He couldn’t move a muscle. Petrified, he watched as Quirrell reached up and began to unwrap his turban. What was going on? The turban fell away. Quirrell’s head looked strangely small without it. Then he turned slowly on the spot.
Harry would have screamed, but he couldn’t make a sound. Where there should have been a back to Quirrell’s head, there was a face, the most terrible face Harry had ever seen. It was chalk white with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils, like a snake.
“Harry Potter…” it whispered.
