What is _vti_cnf? - 5/16/2001 23:08:00
I am a web developer who knows HTML thoroughly, but don't know anything about FrontPage! Here's my question: On our site's server, in every directory, there are folders titled vti_cnf. What are these? And are they neccessary? All of our pages are created by scratch. Could this be something left over from a time when our site was being published by FrontPage? Or, do these folders have something to do with how our searching is set up? Can I remove them or delete their contents as they just duplicate what is already in that directory. Here is the code from our search page: <!--webbot bot="Search" S-Index="All" S-Fields="TimeStamp,DocumentK,Weight" Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated. THANKS! |

What precisely they do I cannot tell you but they cannot be interfered with if you are using any functions that require FP extensions. I recently found this list of functions which require extensions: FrontPage created server-side Image Maps WebBot Confirmation Field component WebBot Discussion component WebBot Registration componentr WebBot Save Results component WebBot Scheduled Image WebBot Scheduled Include component WebBot Search component WebBot HTML Markup component WebBot Include component WebBot Substitution component Database Results Wizard Send To Database Form Handler Nested Sub webs Lightweight Source Control (Document Check-in/Check-out without VSS) Categories Component StyleSheet links to multiple files or ASP files Confirmation Field Discussion Form Handler FrontPage created server-side Image Maps Hit Counter Registration Form Handler Save Results Form Handler Search Form

If you open the vti_cnf file, inside it will look as though there are identical copies of everything , i.e. web pages, graphics etc, but check file sizes - they are much smaller. If you open what looks like a web page, notepad will open it up and there will be loads of meaningless text. The information contained in them are instructions to the server. For example the one that contains your main home page, will have instructions that can recognise what your host wishes the home page to be called, i.e. index.htm or index.html or default.htm. If you move them, delete them or rename them you could be asking for trouble, although I do know peopple who have done that and luckily FP has corrected it, but not always. And yes, they contain information regarding components that require fp extensions. |
