I had a similar problem:
This was my code:
tmp_ddl.DataValueField = CtrlSPCode;
tmp_ddl.DataTextField = CtrlSPFulltext;
tmp_ddl.DataSource = dr;
tmp_ddl.SelectedValue = DDList_ID;
try
{
tmp_ddl.DataBind();
}
catch (ArgumentOutOfRangeException e)
{
tmp_ddl.SelectedValue = "";
tmp_ddl.DataBind(); // second DataBind()
}
No matter what I tried the second DataBind() also threw an exception.

The solution:
First call DataBind()
then set SelectedValue!
My new code:
tmp_ddl.DataValueField = CtrlSPCode;
tmp_ddl.DataTextField = CtrlSPFulltext;
tmp_ddl.DataSource = dr;
tmp_ddl.DataBind();
tmp_ddl.SelectedValue = DDList_ID; // No exception, even if this Value doesn't exist

So in your case this should clear the selection:
DropDownList_Option.DataSource = items2;
DropDownList_Option.DataBind();
DropDownList_Option.ClearSelection();


(I use .net Version 2.0)
